FedEx Fuel Surcharge Déjà Vu

Effective 2 November 2015, FedEx is adjusting its fuel surcharge index.  Experiencing some déjà vu? That may be because just nine months ago, in February 2015, FedEx adjusted its fuel surcharge index.

This time around, fuel surcharges for FedEx Express/International will increase 1.5% to 1.75%, while FedEx Ground surcharges will increase 0.5% – 1.0%.1 These are in addition to the fuel surcharges implemented in February.  And the hits just keep coming: FedEx also announced increased shipping rates effective 4 January 2016, with FedEx Express, Ground, Home Delivery and Freight, all increasing by an average of 4.9%.2
You have to get your products into your customers’ hands, so you have no choice but to ship.  So, how will these changes affect your planning? What are your options for managing rising shipping costs?  How can you proactively address your logistics management?

Before you panic and start taking the hit to your bottom line, talk to your 3PL fulfillment partner.  A great fulfillment partner can help; transportation is the backbone of their business, and they’re on top of the trends and working on ways to optimize their options to their partners’ benefit.  Talk to Vision, we can help you understand and plan for your transportation future.

The Benefits of Premium Packaging

FulfillmentRemember how excited you were as a child to get mail?  And how as an adult, coming home to a package on the doorstep is like receiving a present?  Even if it’s one you ordered, it’s still fun!  Retailers can take this a step further by utilizing premium packaging.  Memorable packaging encourages consumers to purchase again and provides motivation to share the experience on line.  “In fact, the 2015 Dotcom Packaging Report found that almost 40% of online shoppers say branded packaging makes them more likely to recommend a product to friends.”1

Just by upgrading from the traditional brown box, you can exceed your customers’ expectations, and encourage brand loyalty.  There are other options to enhance the experience too.  A personalized note, a product wrapped neatly in branded tissue paper rather than plain paper or no paper at all, or just a little something extra included in the box (samples, stickers, a branded notepad, etc.) – any of these can make the consumer experience pop and get them sharing.  And 55% of consumers who watched an unboxing video say it motivated them to purchase that product.  But how can you deliver a premium packaging experience consistently while still managing your shipping costs?  A 3PL partner can help!

By combining predictive packaging algorithms that optimize packaging size to minimize shipping costs with fulfillment technology that maintains efficiency via intelligent order sequencing, Vision can help you focus your dollars where they can deliver the most return on investment – the ultimate customer experience.  Talk to Vision today, to learn how you can leverage our 3PL services to make a great impression on your customers.

Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment has decades of experience and industry expertise in consumer products fulfillment services.  No matter who your customer is, we treat your customer as our own.  We know what makes a raving fan out of an individual customer, as well as what makes a business partner trust you with their business.  Call or email us to learn how.  We’re certain we’ll be the best fulfillment warehouse partner you have ever had!

How To Keep Shipping Costs Down

It seems that every time you turn around, your shipping costs are increasing.  FedEx and UPS increased fuel surcharges and implemented dimensional (DIM) weight pricing for all ground practices.  Consumers are demanding fast and free delivery.  What are the best practices you can use to manage those shipping costs and protect your profit margins?
Shipping Costs

As Rob Martinez, the CEO of Shipware LLC, discussed recently, a key strategy in reducing your shipping costs begins with evaluating your options.  For example, “Regional parcel carriers offer many benefits when compared to the national carriers, including a larger next-day delivery footprint, later pickups, earlier deliveries, easier contracts with fewer accessorial charges, same day-delivery options and customized solutions. Furthermore, most regional players offer better pricingand more favorable dimensional policies compared to FedEx and UPS.”  The U.S. Postal Service offers other options as well.  And ensure your packaging is as efficient as you can get it, to reduce the impact of DIM weight pricing.  But how do you evaluate the options, choose the best for your business, and get them implemented?

The answer is to leverage your fulfillment services partner.  They should be dialed in to the latest industry news and ready to employ those options on your behalf.  They can provide ideas on transportation, logistics, carrier operations, warehouse technologies, packaging optimization, customer service, and more.  Here at Vision, we embrace change and help our customers to leverage change to maximize return and strategically grow their business.

Los Angeles and Long Beach ports closure status updates

Port of Los Angeles Cargo ShipThe Los Angeles/Long Beach port closures have come to an end and operations are back in full swing. But given the massive backlog (on 2/23 there were 27 container ships waiting to dock rather than the normal one or two), per Paul Bingham, a trade economist with Hackett Associates, “…it could take around three months for the ports to run at full speed again.”   These two ports handle 43 percent of the goods entering the US, and about 27 percent of exports – so how do you manage your logistics needs during the upcoming months?

March 1 the ports opened a “gray chassis pool” that will help ensure more availability and efficient positioning of the truck-trailer chassis used to haul containers to and from the port 2  - are you ready to take advantage of the pool to help expedite your logistics?  A fulfillment services partner can help you get your products where they need to go by leveraging their contacts, knowledge and experience in logistics to navigate challenges such as the backlog at the ports.  Vision’s extensive experience in logistics tracking and planning services encompasses the full spectrum of options, backed by the relationships to make it happen.  Vision can help you navigate the changing paths to get your product where it needs to be – in your customers’ hands.

Are you prepared to capitalize on the explosive growth in mobile e-commerce?

The 2014 holiday shopping season saw retail sales on mobile devices jump over 27% year over year.  Smartphone revenue grew faster than traffic, another impressive statistic since smartphone traffic increases often mean more research or browsing on their smartphones but with a decreasing conversion rate.  Does your customer experience support mobile?

mobile e-commerceAccording to Hayley Silver, vice president of Bizrate Insights, “To take advantage of the growth in mobile phone usage in retail, retailers need to continue to optimize their web site experiences and ensure they are providing legible and useful information to the customer who intends to buy online as well as those who intend to buy offline.  Furthermore, retailers need to look at both online and offline store sales as being positively impacted by the growth in mobile phone access to their web sites.”

The customer experience is everything in an e-commerce store. Today’s savvy shoppers expect beautiful online stores with lots of images, community reviews and ratings, social media integration, and more – all while delivering an intuitive and easy to navigate experience.  Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment provides a great first impression for your customers including a hassle-free and modern e-commerce experience.

Are you prepared to manage your shipping costs in 2015?

As free – and fast - shipping becomes the standard, retailers are struggling to manage the additional
costs.  And as of 5 January 2015, both UPS and FedEx will be imposing dimensional weight pricing on all ground shipments. Dimensional weight pricing (aka DIM pricing) bases rates on a package’s external dimensions rather than its weight.  This is expected to increase costs on about 30% of ground based shipments.  That doesn't include the other rate annual rate hikes and surcharges and combined, this is expected to have a dramatic impact on lightweight shippers since approximately 75% to 90% of online retail orders ship via ground services.  Do you have a plan in place to manage your shipping costs in 2015 and maintain your profit margin?

The right fulfillment partner can help you manage those costs and provide detailed knowledge of the factors driving those shipping costs along with many other strategic and operational recommendations.Whether that’s ideas on how to package your product, access to alternative modes of shipment focusing on small parcel shipping, or providing the key metrics to enable you to identify and maintain optimal inventory levels to manage resources, Vision can help you understand the playing field, and how to best navigate it.  Call us to help build and execute your plan to manage your shipping costs in 2015.

Inventory counts and analysis – just for year end?

As December 31st arrives, for the vast majority of companies with a calendar fiscal year, inventory
physical counts and reconciliation loom large.  The challenges of obtaining and scheduling resources to complete the actual counts and reconcile those counts to the accounting records and resolve discrepancies amidst holiday vacation requests during what is often the busiest time of the year can be nerve-wracking.  It’s a key part of inventory planning at year-end – but shouldn't this be occurring more frequently?

InventoryYour inventory represents a major asset for your company – do you know what’s on hand and available to ship?  What about breakage or obsolescence?  Are you maintaining the optimal level of inventory based on both your historical and forecast sales rates?  These are key metrics you should be using to manage your warehouse operations and expedite fulfillment throughout the year, and not just at year end.

Inventory control and management is often overlooked in warehouse operations. At Vision we strategically monitor your inventory – specifically your order velocity and inventory turn rate – to ensure inventory placement in the warehouse is optimized for both efficiency and cost.  You can manage inventory levels based on actual data rather than a seat-of-the pants feeling.  Maintaining the right inventory levels maximizes your use of resources while supporting the sales operations – and that can translate to increased cash flow and contribution margin.

Planning Year-end Inventory Procedures

One of the less than pleasant tasks at for inventory planning at year-end is the review of inventory for
obsolete items.  Any company can find itself with inventory items that have a decreased net realizable value, or exceed the foreseeable demand. Whether the result of an economic downturn that depressed sales, a new product release that replaces an older product, or other factors, the end result is an overvalued inventory asset.

Man doing inventoryThe management of obsolete inventory is an important step in the product life cycle – even more so at year-end.  The assessment of inventory and the handling of any obsolete items can be a key component of the year-end procedures, providing valuable information to the organization for financial and tax reporting, budgeting and forecasting.  Identifying the underlying cause of the obsolescence can help minimize future occurrences, and also make your warehouse fulfillment operations run more smoothly. And how the diversion or liquidation of such inventory is handled can have a positive or negative impact on the company’s reputation, brand value, and financial position.

When your program is ready for inventory diversion or liquidation, Vision Media Management can help you find the most cost effective solution without leaving our fulfillment warehouse.  Call us to learn more about the solutions we offer for year-end obsolete inventory planning strategy – which can result in an increase return on investment (ROI) for your organization.

Port of Los Angeles 2014 Holiday Planning for Fulfillment Operations

Port of Los Angeles bridge with boat underneath
The holiday season is rapidly approaching for 2014, and already there are concerns about potential delays routing imports through the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  The port is the nation’s biggest container hub.  This article posted on Bloomberg states that after ending the previous holiday season with too much merchandise stacked in warehouses, this year U.S. retailers face the opposite – they may not have enough.

Logistics planning is a key service that your third party fulfillment partner can provide.  Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment can provide expertise and system-driven milestone management services for monitoring your product, beginning with the source manufacturer all the way through to the fulfillment warehouse.

This management insight and insider knowledge is even more critical when potential delays are encountered as mentioned in the article.  Expediting product through the port and associated paperwork can translate into revenue either gained or lost.  It’s early November now – and never too late to have this conversation with your fulfillment warehouse.

Kitting and Assembly Services in Fulfillment

A common function in a warehouse fulfillment operation is Kitting and Assembly.  This typically involves master kitting, final assembly, disassembly, re-work, and more.  This can be a requirement to prepare product for sale/shipping, as well as in repurposing product inventory.

Warehouse workers preparing packages
The best production services are those that are flexible and can easily switch between automation and manual solutions – thus matching the best approach with each situation.  In addition, a company that has the ability to find the similarities within dissimilar processes, can provide a greater return on investment in both situations.

One conversation with our insightful team will convince you of Vision’s ability to plan, streamline, and execute kitting and assembly services.  You will be amazed at our efficiency and flexibility.  Please contact us to discuss your project – we would love to present our ideas.

The Key to Fulfillment Efficiency

A key competitive advantage which can make a significant impact on Fulfillment Efficiency is the ability to find the similarities within dissimilar processes.  Definitely a mouthful, but this is a game changer.

blue and green intersecting circular arrows

Operational productivity is almost always improved by creating repetitive processes.  This allows management to adjust and enhance aspects of the operation in order to streamline efficiency.  At first glance many warehouse and fulfillment operations can appear to be completely unrelated, thus requiring separate and unique processes.  However, finding the commonality in disparate processes is even more critical, and potentially even more rewarding in these situations.  A fulfillment operation must strive to break down these processes and identify elements which can be combined for greater scale, share-ability of resources, and standardization of procedures.

It all begins with breaking down the process into smaller components.  In addition, ask the people on the scene; the individuals who perform the processes usually have a unique insight into the processes they perform.  Leverage them as the valuable assets they are!

Foreign Trade Zone Benefits

Container ship entering port
A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) can be a game changer for a company who manufactures and imports its products into the Port of Los Angeles, or any company near a port operation.  There are significant benefits to be gained by taking advantage of an FTZ.

Some of the main benefits include:

·         Duty Deferral on Product. Inventory is brought into the Foreign Trade Zone and held, without duties and taxes being assessed, until the product leaves the FTZ - presumably to be fulfilled as a paid order to a customer.

·         Port Fees Reduction. For importers that are bringing in more than 1 container per week, there can be significant reductions in the port fees by utilizing a Foreign Trade Zone.

·         Duty Elimination on Product. Inventory re-exported or destroyed without ever leaving the Foreign Trade Zone does not ever get taxed as a US import.

·         Speed to Market. Product destined for the Foreign Trade Zone bypasses customs delays in the port because it will clear customs in the FTZ, thereby getting product available to sell sooner.

Using a Foreign Trade Zone helps to more consistently align the cost of your product with the revenue event, thus impacting both profitability and cash flow.

Accredited Zone Specialist (AZS) – Foreign Trade Zone Certification

International flags on poles
A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) can’t simply be a location – the certification to manage an FTZ is also a critical component.  Becoming an Accredited Zone Specialist (AZS) provides training, qualification, and key technology systems to manage and leverage the zone.

Beyond these benefits, becoming accredited also helps to not only stay current on the various qualifications, it also helps to ensure compliance with the applicable laws and regulations.  This ensures that the Foreign Trade Zone Certification isn’t simply a piece of paper – it illustrates the expertise and dedication to maintaining a successful zone.

If you are a shipping customer looking to take advantage of the many benefits of a Foreign Trade Zone, be sure that the company you choose is an Accredited Zone Specialist.  Ask to see their credentials, and more importantly, ask to see the processes, technology, and their people – the experts!

Warehouse Deep/Bulk Storage Versus Short-term Storage

Fulfillment warehouse storage racks with boxesAll storage is not created equal.  Product storage should be effectively balanced between shorter term order-picking requirements versus longer term bulk needs – and your pricing should reflect that.  At Vision, we provide you with a strategic plan for managing both.

Having a dedicated Inventory Management team is part of the overall strategy.  These are individuals who constantly monitor order velocity and inventory turn, and subsequently manage the ebb and flow of inventory for proper location selection of the inventory throughout the warehouse.  It is definitely a combination of art and science.  However, your inventory should not be tucked into a dusty corner and left forgotten.

We view inventory as one of your most critical assets, with us as the guardian.  We are inventory specialists through and through.
