Inventory counts and analysis – just for year end?

As December 31st arrives, for the vast majority of companies with a calendar fiscal year, inventory
physical counts and reconciliation loom large.  The challenges of obtaining and scheduling resources to complete the actual counts and reconcile those counts to the accounting records and resolve discrepancies amidst holiday vacation requests during what is often the busiest time of the year can be nerve-wracking.  It’s a key part of inventory planning at year-end – but shouldn't this be occurring more frequently?

InventoryYour inventory represents a major asset for your company – do you know what’s on hand and available to ship?  What about breakage or obsolescence?  Are you maintaining the optimal level of inventory based on both your historical and forecast sales rates?  These are key metrics you should be using to manage your warehouse operations and expedite fulfillment throughout the year, and not just at year end.

Inventory control and management is often overlooked in warehouse operations. At Vision we strategically monitor your inventory – specifically your order velocity and inventory turn rate – to ensure inventory placement in the warehouse is optimized for both efficiency and cost.  You can manage inventory levels based on actual data rather than a seat-of-the pants feeling.  Maintaining the right inventory levels maximizes your use of resources while supporting the sales operations – and that can translate to increased cash flow and contribution margin.

How to meet the needs of e-commerce logistics

2014 is projected to see U.S. e-commerce sales increase year over year by 13% per IBM, and for the first time, e-commerce sales outpaced brick and mortar sales over the Thanksgiving and Black Friday sales period although overall sales were actually down from 2013.  The composition of sales for many companies is shifting to a heavier weighting of e-commerce transactions.  But how does warehouse fulfillment for e-commerce differ from that of traditional sales?  And how do you manage those changes?

First, the opportunities to drive efficiencies of fulfilling and moving product in bulk that are found in traditional logistics disappear, to be replaced by direct-to-consumer orders that are one-by-one ane-commerce fulfillment lifecycle can be a lifeline when managing the challenges of e-commerce logistics efficiently.

This would require a pick, pack and ship operation.  Second, e-commerce sales are highly promotion driven, resulting in large swings in order volumes (even changing from day to day).  And last, online orders tend to be unpredictable, both in terms of overall volumes and product popularity (a single mention in the right social media venue can drive sales through the roof unexpectedly).  A partner experienced in supporting an

Planning Year-end Inventory Procedures

One of the less than pleasant tasks at for inventory planning at year-end is the review of inventory for
obsolete items.  Any company can find itself with inventory items that have a decreased net realizable value, or exceed the foreseeable demand. Whether the result of an economic downturn that depressed sales, a new product release that replaces an older product, or other factors, the end result is an overvalued inventory asset.

Man doing inventoryThe management of obsolete inventory is an important step in the product life cycle – even more so at year-end.  The assessment of inventory and the handling of any obsolete items can be a key component of the year-end procedures, providing valuable information to the organization for financial and tax reporting, budgeting and forecasting.  Identifying the underlying cause of the obsolescence can help minimize future occurrences, and also make your warehouse fulfillment operations run more smoothly. And how the diversion or liquidation of such inventory is handled can have a positive or negative impact on the company’s reputation, brand value, and financial position.

When your program is ready for inventory diversion or liquidation, Vision Media Management can help you find the most cost effective solution without leaving our fulfillment warehouse.  Call us to learn more about the solutions we offer for year-end obsolete inventory planning strategy – which can result in an increase return on investment (ROI) for your organization.

Automation makes us Dumb!

There’s a controversial statement.  After all, it takes a great deal of intelligence and expertise to create the automation in the first place.

Woman in WarehouseA recent article in the Wall Street Journal suggested the trend of automation “de-skilling” workers rather than “up-skilling” them was growing even more evident, and is now reaching beyond just factory and into the white-collar world.

This is very relevant to warehouse fulfillment, since beautifully executed fulfillment and shipping is a combination of both warehouse automation and the operational strategic planning behind it.  Not only is successful automation dependent on the implementation, but equally so on the decision of when and where to use automation.

Some situations are clearly perfect for automation in a warehouse or in assembly/production work.  However, in many cases a carefully crafted production plan, which blends manual staging based on repetitive hand motion, coupled with some automation can pay the same or higher dividends with a great level of flexibility at a lower cost.

Let Vision design an operational strategy for you that enhances customer support using the right mix of automation and manual expertise.

Port of Los Angeles 2014 Holiday Planning for Fulfillment Operations

Port of Los Angeles bridge with boat underneath
The holiday season is rapidly approaching for 2014, and already there are concerns about potential delays routing imports through the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  The port is the nation’s biggest container hub.  This article posted on Bloomberg states that after ending the previous holiday season with too much merchandise stacked in warehouses, this year U.S. retailers face the opposite – they may not have enough.

Logistics planning is a key service that your third party fulfillment partner can provide.  Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment can provide expertise and system-driven milestone management services for monitoring your product, beginning with the source manufacturer all the way through to the fulfillment warehouse.

This management insight and insider knowledge is even more critical when potential delays are encountered as mentioned in the article.  Expediting product through the port and associated paperwork can translate into revenue either gained or lost.  It’s early November now – and never too late to have this conversation with your fulfillment warehouse.

Kitting and Assembly Services in Fulfillment

A common function in a warehouse fulfillment operation is Kitting and Assembly.  This typically involves master kitting, final assembly, disassembly, re-work, and more.  This can be a requirement to prepare product for sale/shipping, as well as in repurposing product inventory.

The best production services are those that are flexible and can easily switch between automation and manual solutions – thus matching the best approach with each situation.  In addition, a company that has the ability to find the similarities within dissimilar processes, can provide a greater return on investment in both situations.

One conversation with our insightful team will convince you of Vision’s ability to plan, streamline, and execute kitting and assembly services.  You will be amazed at our efficiency and flexibility.  Please contact us to discuss your project – we would love to present our ideas.

The Key to Fulfillment Efficiency

A key competitive advantage which can make a significant impact on Fulfillment Efficiency is the ability to find the similarities within dissimilar processes.  Definitely a mouthful, but this is a game changer.

blue and green intersecting circular arrows

Operational productivity is almost always improved by creating repetitive processes.  This allows management to adjust and enhance aspects of the operation in order to streamline efficiency.  At first glance many warehouse and fulfillment operations can appear to be completely unrelated, thus requiring separate and unique processes.  However, finding the commonality in disparate processes is even more critical, and potentially even more rewarding in these situations.  A fulfillment operation must strive to break down these processes and identify elements which can be combined for greater scale, share-ability of resources, and standardization of procedures.

It all begins with breaking down the process into smaller components.  In addition, ask the people on the scene; the individuals who perform the processes usually have a unique insight into the processes they perform.  Leverage them as the valuable assets they are!

Foreign Trade Zone Benefits

Container ship entering port
A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) can be a game changer for a company who manufactures and imports its products into the Port of Los Angeles, or any company near a port operation.  There are significant benefits to be gained by taking advantage of an FTZ.

Some of the main benefits include:

·         Duty Deferral on Product. Inventory is brought into the Foreign Trade Zone and held, without duties and taxes being assessed, until the product leaves the FTZ - presumably to be fulfilled as a paid order to a customer.

·         Port Fees Reduction. For importers that are bringing in more than 1 container per week, there can be significant reductions in the port fees by utilizing a Foreign Trade Zone.

·         Duty Elimination on Product. Inventory re-exported or destroyed without ever leaving the Foreign Trade Zone does not ever get taxed as a US import.

·         Speed to Market. Product destined for the Foreign Trade Zone bypasses customs delays in the port because it will clear customs in the FTZ, thereby getting product available to sell sooner.

Using a Foreign Trade Zone helps to more consistently align the cost of your product with the revenue event, thus impacting both profitability and cash flow.

Accredited Zone Specialist (AZS) – Foreign Trade Zone Certification

International flags on poles
A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) can’t simply be a location – the certification to manage an FTZ is also a critical component.  Becoming an Accredited Zone Specialist (AZS) provides training, qualification, and key technology systems to manage and leverage the zone.

Beyond these benefits, becoming accredited also helps to not only stay current on the various qualifications, it also helps to ensure compliance with the applicable laws and regulations.  This ensures that the Foreign Trade Zone Certification isn’t simply a piece of paper – it illustrates the expertise and dedication to maintaining a successful zone.

If you are a shipping customer looking to take advantage of the many benefits of a Foreign Trade Zone, be sure that the company you choose is an Accredited Zone Specialist.  Ask to see their credentials, and more importantly, ask to see the processes, technology, and their people – the experts!

Warehouse Deep/Bulk Storage Versus Short-term Storage

Fulfillment warehouse storage racks with boxesAll storage is not created equal.  Product storage should be effectively balanced between shorter term order-picking requirements versus longer term bulk needs – and your pricing should reflect that.  At Vision, we provide you with a strategic plan for managing both.

Having a dedicated Inventory Management team is part of the overall strategy.  These are individuals who constantly monitor order velocity and inventory turn, and subsequently manage the ebb and flow of inventory for proper location selection of the inventory throughout the warehouse.  It is definitely a combination of art and science.  However, your inventory should not be tucked into a dusty corner and left forgotten.

We view inventory as one of your most critical assets, with us as the guardian.  We are inventory specialists through and through.

How to Maintain B2B Retail Routing Guide Compliance

Those who have shipped products for a B2B Retail program know that Routing Guides - and by association, chargebacks - are not to be taken lightly.

In today’s competitive world of the big box retailers, vendor compliance is critical for retailers to maintain their already low margins.  They have succeeded in aggressively pushing standards down to their vendors.  That manifests in the Routing Guide.

Some Routing Guides can be small and relatively straight-forward.  However, there are also hundred-page beasts which dictate label positioning, tape usage, pallet stacking and strapping, photography requirements, same-story shipping schedules, and more.

Positive economic indicators in 2014?

The fulfillment and logistics industry can contain some very interesting indicators of the overall health and direction of the economy.  After all, many aspects of fulfillment are tied to consumer confidence through purchasing, and the resulting shipping/fulfillment.

What’s new in Fulfillment Technology?

Fulfillment warehouse worker stacking boxes

Vision Consumer Products has a long history of being a technology innovator in the Third-Party Logistics (3PL) space.  Necessity is always the key to innovation, particularly in an industry that must constantly balance both efficiency and quality.  Here’s a quick look at some of the key innovations from Vision CPF.

Predictive packaging - Minimization of dunnage (reducing cost and waste), in addition to proper product protection (enhancement of order presentation), are just two critical benefits of Vision’s Predictive Packaging technology.  Vision’s system automatically determines the most optimal size of carton for each order dynamically, based on the product dimensions.

E-Commerce - The customer experience is everything in an e-commerce store.  Today, savvy shoppers expect beautiful online stores with lots of images, community reviews and ratings, social media integration, and more – all while being intuitive and easy to navigate.  Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment provides a great first impression for your customers, including a hassle-free and modern e-commerce experience. Here's a link to our demo store: http://visioncpfdemostore.azurewebsites.net

Intelligent Order Sequencing - Gone are the days when a warehouse team member manually prints pick sheets and order support documentation, and manually plans the picking, packaging, and shipping priorities.  Our Intelligent Order Sequencing technology plans all of this based on predetermined business rules customized for each customer’s program.

Pick to Voice - Pick to Voice can provide exceptional flexibility in a warehouse picking environment, while also maintaining the highest degree of warehouse throughput and efficiency.  At Vision, our trained warehouse personnel leverage this exciting technology to follow a standardized picking process, even with non-standard product.

Nothing demonstrates technology better than seeing it in person.  We would love to give you a tour of our warehouse and show you how we’ve woven proven and innovative technology into our operational processes.

How does Pick to Voice work?

Pick to voice is an exciting technology that has gained steam in warehouse technology and operations in the last few years.  Some of this is due to advances in the quality of the voice recognition accuracy, as well as tighter and more efficient integration into existing warehouse operations.

Pick to voice works very well in a fulfillment warehouse when the product base lacks consistency in both size and identification.  In many warehouses, the picking staff does not have 100% UPC bar code labeling.  This makes it difficult to rely on a bar-code only order picking system.  In this situation the fulfillment technology needs to be flexible enough to handle both product with bar codes as well as those without.

A Pick to voice system is built to walk the order picker through a pre-defined operational script; guiding the picker to the correct location while providing a very high level of picking accuracy based on continues challenge/response prompts confirming the product location, the product selection, and the quantity picked.  A well-designed pick to voice process can accomplish this in virtually the same amount of pick time used in a bar code scanning only environment, but with significantly greater flexibility.

We would love to give you a tour of our warehouse and a first hand demonstration of our Pick to Voice technology and processes.  It will give you an entirely new perspective on how flexible a 3PL Fulfillment company can provide scalable and efficient fulfillment even with the most challenging product inventory environments.

How to Speed Up Shipping

All fulfillment warehouses that ship consumer products are faced with the age-old quandary: how to speed up the shipping process.  That includes both picking the inventory and packing out the orders. Most still do it the old fashioned way.  They staff up a manual order routing desk whose sole job is to physically print out, sort, and prioritize the orders into piles, and then give these orders to the order pickers for the inventory pulls.

Man Working in a Fulfillment WarehouseThere has to be a better method right?  After all how do you handle spikes in volume?   How do you optimize priorities in shipping service levels?  How do you build quality into the process itself?

At Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment, our fulfillment technology is second to none, and helps to always maintain our warehouse efficiency.  Vision does it by expert logic in the form of intelligent order sequencing: all order fulfillment planned in advance in real time by the most intelligent business rules created to ship your product on-time, on-budget, and on-spec - every time.

Our system automatically routes our operations to fit your pre-determined best practice business rules – all set up in advance based on sound warehouse picking and packing logic custom tailored to your service level commitments.  This includes sorting, prioritizing, and sequencing of tens of thousands of orders daily, based on the most efficient warehouse location walk sequence for both batch and wave picking, service level commitments, optimal pack out method, and shipping method.  The end result is faster shipping
out of your fulfillment warehouse.

We would love to give you a demonstration.  It will raise your expectations on how fast, efficient, scalable, and accurate your shipping can be.

What is Predictive Packaging?

In a fulfillment warehouse, size matters in shipping - using the right size box for shipping minimizes dunnage, improves the presentation quality of your order upon receipt, and most of all avoids costly dimensional weight penalties.

Many warehouse operations have some predetermined number of standard box sizes, and the order packer manually selects the box in which the order will be fulfilled.  This results in very little consistency, not to mention the potential for a tremendous degree of waste – in extra dunnage and box cost.  An oversized box can also allow excess product shifting, adding to the potential that the product is damaged during delivery.  Lastly, and perhaps most impactful is that in many cases this also costs much more in shipping based on dimensional weight, because frequently a larger than necessary box is used.

Predictive PackagingVision Consumer Products Fulfillment’s proprietary predictive packaging algorithms insure the right size is always used in fulfillment and warehouse operations – all done automatically in advance.  Our systems evaluate the order components, determines the best strategy for product combination within each carton, and then selects the most appropriate box size based a predetermined level of acceptable void space.

Ask your current warehouse partner or personnel about predictive packaging.  If you get back a blank stare, then you know you have the opportunity save cost!  If you’re considering a new fulfillment partner, you’ll be surprised at how much the right partner can present many opportunities to save cost while also providing your business with a scalable approach to managing your growth along the way.

Leveraging variable labor in fulfillment

Managing the variability of your resources – facility, labor, and equipment – can make or break any business shipping consumer products.  Not actively managing variable resources can also create an unmanageable burden for both new companies and those going through a growth phase.  Leveraging your fulfillment warehouse’s variable capacity can not only transfer the burden and thus the risk to another entity, but can also provide even greater capabilities.

LaborBy its very nature, a fulfillment warehouse partner must manage complete variability in the usage of their facility, labor, and equipment – this is a core requirement of a successful fulfillment operation.  A company who does not consider their ability to manage variability as one of their competitive strengths is severely hamstrung in their operations.  This is an area where your fulfillment warehouse partner can shine by providing you the ability to seamlessly vary your scheduled labor, expand your storage footprint nearly at will, and to balance efficient combination of manual labor and automation.

Discuss variability with your warehouse partner as it relates to your fulfillment operations, and see what they can offer.  If you’re considering a new fulfillment partner, you’ll be surprised at how much the right partner can minimize your risk while providing your business with a scalable approach to managing your growth.

E-Commerce

E-Commerce: begins and ends with your consumer products fulfillment warehouse. For many new e-commerce businesses, selecting a fulfillment warehouse partner to ship their consumer products is the last thing on their mind.  However, it is arguably on of the first things that should be considered.  Not only is this critical for safeguarding your product, enhancing customer service, and timely and accurate shipping of your order; your consumer products fulfillment warehouse can also provide an innovative e-commerce shopping cart web store.

There are many benefits to your fulfillment warehouse partner managing your e-commerce store.  First, they will ensure that the products listed on your store always match those in the warehouse management system (WMS).  Keeping the product attributes, pricing, availability, etc. in sync is crucial for a positive customer experience.  In addition, the fulfillment partner’s e-commerce store will already be completely integrated with their order management system (OMS) and their WMS – thus cutting down on moving parts and required integration – which reduces the potential for error as well as minimizing start-up costs.  Lastly, this consolidated ownership also removes the potential for finger pointing – the consumer products fulfillment warehouse is accountable for the process from start to finish.

Why use a 3PL Fulfillment company?

A fulfillment warehouse partner, also known as a Third Party Logistics (3PL) company, can be used to strategically grow your company without the massive capital expenditure.  By taking over much of the unpredictable operational requirement and investment, it can allow you to focus on what you do best – which is running your business.

Using a 3PL fulfillment company essentially means that you outsource the storage of your product (warehousing) as well as the fulfillment, or shipping of your product to the end consumer (fulfillment).  This can be a lifesaver during a rapid growth period, or even in a period of stability – either way it allows you to avoid the increased facility expense, infrastructure and equipment purchases (such as pallet racking, conveyor lines, and picking equipment), and of course save an enormous amount on labor.
Choosing the right 3PL fulfillment partner can bring a wealth of experience from a myriad of industries, as well as the ability to leverage facility, labor, and equipment.  You gain from their dedication to constantly refine and optimize the process, as well as continual quality improvement – both very critical in fulfillment and warehouse operations.  This can enable you to maintain a leading edge fulfillment operation without the trial and error.

What is the difference between B2B and B2C fulfillment?

A fulfillment warehouse company can be a strategic partner that enables your company to expand rapidly, as well as allowing you to focus on what you do best.  While a fulfillment partner can provide a long list of helpful services, two primary services generally provided are B2C Fulfillment Services, and B2B Fulfillment Services.  You may have heard these two terms many times before: B2C and B2B; but have you ever wondered what the difference was?

B2C stands for “business to consumer”.  This essentially covers where a business (such as an e-commerce online store) is shipping product to an end customer or consumer.  A classic example is where an individual purchases something on a web store, and then the company’s warehouse ships that product to the individual’s home or office.  This is a business to consumer, or “B2C” fulfillment transaction.
As you might have guessed, B2B stands for “business to business”.  This is where a business ships product directly to another business – generally in higher quantities, or in bulk.  An example of this would be where a company is supplying product to another company for resale – for example, shipping several pallets of a company’s product to a big box retailer such as Target or Walmart.  This is a business to business, or “B2B” fulfillment transaction.
Fulfillment Warehouse
There are very significant differences between a B2C and a B2B transaction.  B2C fulfillment typically involves a higher number of individual orders, each with smaller quantities within the order.  B2B fulfillment generally involves a smaller number of orders, but each order is much larger.  Both have their nuances and critical success factor.  B2C orders are all about speed, accuracy, and customer service.  B2B orders can involve speed, but are heavily weighted towards accuracy – typically being required to follow a very detailed and exacting “routing guide” provided by the retailer.  Failure to follow these specifications can result in very large penalties, or “charge backs” – and that ruins everyone’s day!

Vision Consumer Products Fulfillment has decades of experience and industry expertise in both B2C and B2B Fulfillment services.  No matter who your customer is, we treat your customer as our own.  We know what makes a raving fan out of an individual customer, as well as what makes a business partner trust you with their business.  Call or email us to learn how.  We’re certain we’ll be the best fulfillment warehouse partner you have ever had!

Three Reasons to use Intelligent Order Sequencing

Surviving in business is tough, which is why every company needs to find a way of making sure that it is has an edge over its competitors. This means as well as providing a high quality services, businesses must also find ways to optimize service and efficiency, and this is where intelligent Order Sequencing can be a valuable asset.

fulfillment warehouseSometimes, every business needs a little bit of help to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible, and that orders can be dispatched in the most straight forward way possible; this is where using an Intelligent Order Sequencing can help.

Detailed below are three ways that Intelligent Order Sequencing can enable your business to move to the next level.

Managing Mass Orders

Managing mass orders can be a difficult process, especially if a company has limited resources and a tight deadline to meet. However, an intelligent Order Sequencing system can allow a business to cope with the demands of mass orders while enabling a business to comply with best practice at all times.

Handling Volume

Every business will have peaks and troughs in orders and the busy times are a real test for many companies. In order for a company to be a success, it must be able to meet the high demands on its business in a cost effective, fast manner and it must be able to cope with high volume orders if the company is to grow.
Intelligent Order Sequencing allows this and enables every business – large or small – to cope with the demands of modern day business.

Prioritizing Orders

Some orders will need to be dispatched quicker than others. Some customers will have selected a special delivery service for an item that they need in a hurry, while other orders won’t have the same urgency.

By using an Intelligent Order Sequencing system, this process of prioritizing orders is automated, meaning that there is no need to manually process every order, which is time consuming and will ultimately affect productivity and profits.
